The first pillar is declaration of faith (shahada).\u00a0 There are two shahadas: \u201cThere is no god but God\u201d and \u201cMuhammed is the messenger of God\u201d.\u00a0 These shahadas are typically said in Arabic.\u00a0 They are said five times a day during the prayers.\u00a0 They are also the first thing said to new babies and the last thing said to people as they are dying.<\/p>\n
The second pillar is prayer (salah).\u00a0 The prayers are said five times a day.\u00a0 Time for prayer is announced by a Muezzin.\u00a0 Before each prayer, there are ablutions.\u00a0 A person washes their hands, face, and feet.\u00a0 The times for the prayers are at sunrise, midday, afternoon, evening, and night.\u00a0 Each prayer is said facing the Kaaba in Mecca.<\/p>\n
The third pillar is almsgiving (zakat).\u00a0 This pillar requires all Muslims to give 2.5% of yearly income to charity.\u00a0 The donations are used for upkeep of Islamic sites and are given to the poor.<\/p>\n
The fourth pillar is fasting (sawm).\u00a0 This pillar is fasting during Ramadan.\u00a0 Ramadan is the holiest month of the Islamic calendar.\u00a0 Muslims fast during this month between sunrise and sunset every day.\u00a0 At sunset the fasting ends and there are often gatherings and people break their fast with dates.\u00a0 The fasting is intended to remind Muslims that they are all dependent on Allah.\u00a0 At the end of Ramadan there is a three-day holiday called Id-ul-Fitr to celebrate.<\/p>\n
The fifth pillar is pilgrimage (Hajj).\u00a0 This pillar requires Muslims to go to Mecca during the twelfth month of the lunar calendar.\u00a0 The Hajj is only required to be completed once, and if the person is able to go.\u00a0 During their time in Mecca, all Muslims wear only white sheets to remind them they are all the same.\u00a0 The events are to walk around the Kaaba seven times, walking between Mount Safa and Mount Marweh, and stoning the Devil in Mina.\u00a0 They go to Arafat and Mina to complete these tasks.\u00a0 The purpose of the Hajj is to follow in the footsteps of Muhammad.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
