<em>Ailanthus altissima<\/em>, is a beautiful name for a pest tree.\u00a0 I have heard it is one of the few species illegal to plant in Indianapolis, due to its tendency to spread aggressively via seed.\u00a0 Male and female flowers are borne on separate plants.\u00a0 Single female trees can produce thousands of wind-borne seed.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_216\" style=\"width: 235px\" (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-216\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tree-of-heaven on the Butler University campus.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It is a native of Asia where it apparently got its common name from growing so fast to reach heaven.\u00a0 Twigs have the density of balsa wood.\u00a0 I use them to help students learn to recognize the characteristics of twigs, like leaf scars and bundle scars, because these features are so large on Tree-of-heaven.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This tree is the one immortalized in the book <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">A Tree Grows in Brooklyn<\/span> and, indeed, I did see if growing there when I spoke at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden this spring.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tree-of-heaven can grow quite large.\u00a0 There is one in a backyard across from Binkley\u2019s on College at Kessler<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_215\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tee-of-heaven&#8217;s very large leaves, with many leaflets on a single leaf, and wind dispersed seeds.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ave. that my husband and I see every Monday late afternoon during discount draft day. \u00a0Even in this dry summer it had an impressive display of flowers and seeds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The plant also sends up multiple shoots from the same rootstock,
