On Campus Employment: An Inside Look

From move in day to graduation, the life of a college student is busy, but in a great way. School work, Greek life, clubs, sports, and the list goes on…are all things that take up time in a college student’s life. What about a job? Even better, what about an On Campus job? Students at Butler University have many opportunities to snag an On Campus job at many different places. One of the more sought after locations to apply is the Butler University Health and Recreation Center (HRC). So many students apply every year that the HRC professional staff had to create their own application website apart from the Butler University student employment site, also know as B.L.U.E.  Freshman looking for jobs at the HRC are encouraged to apply in mid-July, simply because the professional staff will have so many applications to sort through. Interviews are held the first week freshman are on campus; the interviews are held by current HRC staff, professional and students. Freshman that are hired have to instantly learn to manage the added pressure of college school work along with a job that requires at least six hours a week.

Katelyn Aschacher, a newly hired freshman Control Desk Supervisor at the HRC, talked about managing her time with a job: “In the beginning [managing my time] was a concern of mine, but since I received the position I believe it has helped me manage my time.” When asked why she chose to get an On Campus job her freshman year she said “I wanted to get an on campus job as a freshman because I wanted to meet people. I heard that it was a great opportunity and I wanted to try it out.”

The HRC is statistically the most desired places to work on campus, but it is of course not the only place to work on campus. Another popular place to work is the Office of Admissions. If hired at the Office of Admissions, students become Butler Student Ambassadors (BSA) and can have a range of responsibilities. BSA’s are responsible for scheduling and giving tours on campus, working the front desk of the office, and even working with University officials. Kyle Olson, a sophomore student at Butler says he became a tour guide “because he has wanted to be a tour guide ever since [he] began looking at schools.” He also admits “it is the highest paid on campus job.”   From the HRC to the Office to Admissions to selling concessions at Butler sporting events, students can find On Campus jobs just about anywhere. Having the time, desire, and good work ethic can help to obtain On Campus employment. When looking for employment at your school, all it takes is just to ask. Ask current students and professors where to get involved.
