FEATURED RESEARCH: A Neurodiversity Perspective on Fostering Marketplace Inclusion by Bridging Ability Mismatches

By: Author: Meredith Rhoads
Published in: Journal of Public Policy & Marketing (February 2025)

What this research explores
Some people think and interact differently — this includes people with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and other neurodivergent traits. These differences can make everyday interactions, like customer service or workplace collaboration, harder to understand for both sides. This “double empathy problem” happens because both people struggle to fully get each other’s perspective.

Why it matters
If organizations don’t recognize these differences, policies meant to help (like accommodations) don’t always work, and neurodivergent people often have to adapt on their own. Seeing neurodiversity as a natural difference, not a problem, helps everyone work together better.

Key Insight
Making it normal to talk about differences, being clear in interactions, and including neurodivergent people in teams can turn these challenges into strengths—helping people feel valued and improving experiences for both employees and customers.
