FEATURED RESEARCH: The Role of Women’s Empowerment on Environmental Sustainability: A Cross-Country Analysis
By: Author: Ronia Hawash
Published in: Journal of Public Policy & Journal of Strategic Innovation and Sustainability (January 2025)
What this research explores
Environmental sustainability and gender equality are often discussed separately — but this research shows they’re deeply connected. By analyzing data from 135 countries, the study examines how women’s political empowerment influences environmental outcomes, particularly CO₂ emissions, across both developed and developing nations.
Why it matters
Climate change disproportionately impacts women, especially in developing countries, yet women are often underrepresented in political decision-making. When women lack political voice, environmental policies may overlook lived experiences tied to water access, food security, health, and community sustainability — limiting their effectiveness.
Key insight
Countries with higher levels of women’s political participation tend to have lower CO₂ emissions, with the strongest effects seen in developing nations. Empowering women in political leadership isn’t just about representation — it’s a proven pathway to stronger environmental policy, reduced emissions, and more sustainable futures.
