Students aren\u2019t told exactly what to do or how to get there. Instead, they\u2019re asked to figure it out, together, under real deadlines and real expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the premise of the <a href=\"https:\/\/analyticschallenge.butler.edu\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/analyticschallenge.butler.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NCAA Final Four Analytics Challenge<\/a>, where analytics move beyond the classroom and into a professional arena. Using real NCAA data, students step into the role of analysts, strategists, and storytellers \u2013 applying technical skills while learning how to communicate insights that matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally launched as a regional analytics competition, the challenge has grown into a statewide experience that mirrors Indianapolis\u2019s role as both a basketball capital and an innovation hub. Now co-hosted by <a href=\"https:\/\/stories.butler.edu\/from-campus-to-center-court-butler-co-hosts-2026-ncaa-final-four-analytics-challenge\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/stories.butler.edu\/from-campus-to-center-court-butler-co-hosts-2026-ncaa-final-four-analytics-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Butler University<\/a> and the NCAA, the Final Four Analytics Challenge invites students from across Indiana to step into the kind of analytical work happening behind the scenes of major sporting events \u2013 and far beyond them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students compete in teams of two to five, working through multiple rounds that require predictive modeling, visualization, and clear business communication. They\u2019re asked not only to analyze data, but to explain it \u2013 translating complex findings into insights decision-makers can actually use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For many students, the draw is simple: it\u2019s real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:30% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"677\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/lacybusiness\/files\/2026\/01\/IMG_2529-2-677x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-729 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/lacybusiness\/files\/2026\/01\/IMG_2529-2-677x1024.jpg 677w, https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/lacybusiness\/files\/2026\/01\/IMG_2529-2-198x300.jpg 198w, https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/lacybusiness\/files\/2026\/01\/IMG_2529-2-768x1162.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/lacybusiness\/files\/2026\/01\/IMG_2529-2.jpg 931w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 677px) 100vw, 677px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>\u201cAs a Finance and Business Technology Analytics dual major, I wanted hands-on experience in data analysis, exploration, and modeling,\u201d senior Jentry Gottfried said. \u201cKnowing I could potentially present to the NCAA challenged me in a completely new way and opened my eyes to what a career in analytics can look like.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>That challenge often pushes students well beyond what a traditional classroom can offer. Past participants describe learning new tools, navigating ambiguity, and working at a pace that mirrors professional environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis competition gave me hands-on experience with advanced Tableau modeling, Google Collaboratory, and data classification,\u201d Gottfried said. \u201cThose are skills you don\u2019t just learn conceptually \u2013 you learn them by doing, at the scale real projects require.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The analytics challenge is intentionally designed to welcome students from a wide range of academic backgrounds. It was fast-paced, and an incredible experience. I\u2019m so grateful for the way it pushed me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For many students, the impact extends well beyond the competition itself. Participants consistently point to the competition as a turning point \u2013 academically, professionally, or both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe challenge broadened my perspective on the opportunities that exist in analytics,\u201d Gottfried said. \u201cIt showed me how the skills we\u2019re learning right now can make us changemakers in a rapidly evolving industry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Juanita Rojas, a junior finance and economics double major, echoed that sentiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:30% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"722\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/lacybusiness\/files\/2026\/01\/IMG_1983-722x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-731 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/lacybusiness\/files\/2026\/01\/IMG_1983-722x1024.jpg 722w, https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/lacybusiness\/files\/2026\/01\/IMG_1983-211x300.jpg 211w, https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/lacybusiness\/files\/2026\/01\/IMG_1983-768x1089.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/lacybusiness\/files\/2026\/01\/IMG_1983-1083x1536.jpg 1083w, https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/lacybusiness\/files\/2026\/01\/IMG_1983-1444x2048.jpg 1444w, https:\/\/blogs.butler.edu\/lacybusiness\/files\/2026\/01\/IMG_1983-scaled.jpg 1805w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 722px) 100vw, 722px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>\u201cThe challenge allowed me to apply analytical foundations from the classroom to a real-world problem,\u201d Rojas said. \u201cI learned how to balance technical analysis with clear, actionable insights \u2013 how to tell a data story that actually matters to stakeholders.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>That ability to communicate insights is a core focus of the competition, and one that students say has followed them into internships and professional settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter the competition, my confidence with data visualization and advocating for recommendations grew significantly,\u201d Rojas said. \u201cIt reinforced my interest in using analytics in real decision-making environments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The experience begins with a Tip-Off Event on Feb. 2 at the NCAA Hall of Champions, where teams receive their case and connect with peers and professionals. Finalists advance to present in person on April 6 at the Indiana Convention Center just ahead of the Men\u2019s National Championship game \u2013 a national stage that underscores just how real the work has become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For students considering whether to register, past participants offer simple advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRegister to broaden your perspective, get hands-on experience, and work with a team that will push you to be better,\u201d Gottfried said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re looking to expand your skill set in a competitive environment, this is it,\u201d Green added. \u201cThe skills you take away will serve you long after the competition ends.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Indianapolis prepares to welcome the Final Four, LSB students won\u2019t just be watching the action \u2013 they\u2019ll be contributing to the kind of analytical thinking that drives it.
