Hunter is a U.S. historian working on slavery and emancipation in the Antebellum South. He is a native of Leominster, Massachusetts and earned his B.A. in History at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.westfield.ma.edu\/academics\/history-department\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Westfield State College <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">before heading to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/history.uconn.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">University of Connecticut<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for his M.A., also in History. Dr. Hunter earned his Ph.D. in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/richardscenter.la.psu.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Richards Civil War Era Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/history.la.psu.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pennsylvania State University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. He teaches courses that cover topics and eras in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, including Colonial America, the American Revolution, American Slavery, the U.S. South, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Transatlantic World. When he\u2019s not working, Dr. Hunter likes engaging Butler students as a Faculty in Residence, fishing from his kayak, playing the guitar, watching college sports, playing hurling and Gaelic football with the Indianapolis Gaelic Athletic Association, cooking, and traveling to new places.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Areas of Research and Scholarship<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Hunter\u2019s current book project examines the legal and community dynamics of black North Carolinians\u2019 firearm use in the colonial and antebellum eras. His recent publications include, \u201c\u2018A nuisance requiring correction\u2019: Firearm Laws, Black Mobility, and White Property in Antebellum Eastern North Carolina\u201d in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/i40172114\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">North Carolina Historical Review<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; \u201c\u2018In the Exercise of a Sound Discretion, Who, of This Class of Persons, Shall Have a Right to the License\u2026\u2019: Family, Race, and Firearms in Antebellum North Carolina\u201d in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/0363199019863839\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Journal of Family History<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; and \u201c\u2018Patriots,\u2019 \u2018Cowards,\u2019 and\u2018Men Disloyal at Heart:\u2019 Labor and Politics at the Springfield Armory,1861-1865\u201d in the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/eds.b.ebscohost.com\/abstract?site=eds&amp;scope=site&amp;jrnl=08993718&amp;AN=140436016&amp;h=d2xBI1dtaNEcUYaWmRfOxLo9gpl%2bCDJvEwBJmuUdjo8RfhDgtKMYHgujKDne7HxASsteAbDuy2%2bB26rvQBqGWg%3d%3d&amp;crl=f&amp;resultLocal=ErrCrlNoResults&amp;resultNs=Ehost&amp;crlhashurl=login.aspx%3fdirect%3dtrue%26profile%3dehost%26scope%3dsite%26authtype%3dcrawler%26jrnl%3d08993718%26AN%3d140436016\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Journal of Military History<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
