He received his BA in English from Washington University in St. Louis, and his MA and PHD in Folklore from Indiana University. Mould is a Fellow of the American Folklore Society (AFS) and has served on the AFS Executive Board, Chaired the AFS Media and Public Outreach Committee, and serves on the Advisory Boards for the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Journal of Folklore Research<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mormon Studies Book Series<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at Farleigh Dickinson University Press.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Before coming to Butler in 2019, he was the J.Earl Danieley Distinguished Professor of Anthropology and Folklore at Elon University where he taught for 18 years and served in various roles including Director of the Honors Program, Chair of the Sociology and Anthropology Department, and Director of PERCS: The Program for Ethnographic Research and Community Studies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Areas of Research and Scholarship<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tom Mould teaches and publishes\u00a0 in the areas of folklore, language and culture, American Indian studies, oral narrative, religious and sacred narrative, contemporary legend, identity, ethnography, genre, and performance theory. In\u00a0 addition to numerous journal articles, he is the co-editor of two books\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iupress.org\/9780253223739\/the-individual-and-tradition\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Individual and Tradition<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (2011) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uofupress.lib.utah.edu\/latter-day-lore\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Latter-day Lore: Mormon Folklore Studies<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (2013)\u2014and author of four more <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uapress.ua.edu\/product\/Choctaw-Prophecy,1357.aspx\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ChoctawProphecy: A Legacy of the Future<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (2003), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upress.state.ms.us\/Books\/C\/Choctaw-Tales\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Choctaw Tales<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (2004), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Still-Small-Voice-Narrative-Revelation\/dp\/0874218179\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Still, the Small Voice: Revelation, Personal Narrative, and the Mormon Folk Tradition<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(2011), and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iupress.org\/9780253048035\/overthrowing-the-queen\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Overthrowing the Queen: Telling Stories of Welfare in America<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (2020), which won the Chicago Folklore Prize and the Brian McConnell Book Award from the International Society for Contemporary Legend Research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He has also produced video documentaries for public television on folk art and culture in Indiana, Kentucky and North Carolina and has written articles, blogs, and radio stories for a general audience on a range of topics including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/life-on-welfare-isnt-what-most-people-think-it-is-139526\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">perceptions of welfare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/audio\/2019\/11\/05\/welfare-and-american-dream\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">American Dream<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibj.com\/articles\/with-rising-unemployment-will-views-of-welfare-change\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">unemployment and public assistance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.press.uillinois.edu\/wordpress\/fake-news-from-the-journal-of-american-folklore-part-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fake news<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.postandcourier.com\/opinion\/in-debating-confederate-flag-we-re-asking-the-wrong-questions\/article_13fb99b0-a052-54c4-b977-42666e80093a.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">confederate flag<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For a complete CV, click <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/api-profiles\/tmould-EkWyWJNhi.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Current Research Projects<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><i>Choctaw Traditions: Life and Customs of the Mississippi Choctaw<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This book will explore recent and contemporary traditions among the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians through the personal experience narratives and family histories shared by community members today. This research is based on current ethnographic fieldwork with tribal members as well as archival research.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Internet Memes for Social Justice<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: This research explores the efficacy of internet memes to work towards social justice, specifically in the area of economic justice around issues of public assistance in the U.S. This research is a spin off from previous work studying the narratives people tell about public assistance in this country and how those stories shape perception and policy.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Mentored Student Research Projects at Butler\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2022\u2014Ericela Sahagun. \u201cHispanic Hoosiers: Ethnonym use among the Hispanic population in Indianapolis.\u201d Selected as a Butler Summer Institute Scholar.
