When I was tasked with the assignment of setting a Biblical text to music, I assumed it was not going to be too hard. I stand corrected now. I had problems with a few things, but I struggled the most with keeping the Biblical integrity. The Bible, to me at least, is a sacred text and it felt wrong to tamper with it too much. The song that I chose fit well, but I have still had to do a bit of tweaking. There was even one point in the song where I decided to put some of the later verses of the text towards the beginning, because I thought it fit the message more. I am still debating if I will keep it, though. In class today, I was reminded that as long as the message of the Biblical text is still at the heart of the song, there is no need to worry over technicalities. Even though the Bible itself is the inspired Word of God, it does not cover every word that Jesus ever said. Even the Gospels have some significant differences in stories. Composition of Biblical texts into musical settings is very clearly an art that I respect even more now. People who write Biblical songs have a large burden to carry to make sure they keep the integrity and the message of such a sacred book.
