Picturing the Bible

Some versions of the text of the Bible are difficult to understand; however, when we try to understand the verses, we tend to form pictures in our heads of the scene. Whether that be from a former situation or simply what we think it would look like, it certainly helps us understand what the disciples are attempting to point out. When I hear the story of Jesus’s birth, I still see a moment from my sister’s Christmas pageant. Reading the story of Adam and Eve makes me remember a children’s study bible I used to have that showed pictures of what the illustrator thought took place. Many other texts make me recall songs I sang or illustrated worksheets I completed in Vacation Bible School and Sunday School.

In class today, we watched the Prince of Egypt movie scene. It is evident that the scene helps us understand the story better even though there are some portions that maybe are not as accurate. The scene represents to us that the pictures we form maybe are not always true and relevant; however, it is important to form these to help us and others learn more about the Bible.
