As we discussed in class, Handel’s Messiah contains many texts that can be taken out of context. Because of the prophecies that Jesus fulfills, Christians tent to interpret old testament texts in a way that they were not intended to be interpreted in. Because of Jesus, texts take on a new meaning and Christians take them out of context to make them apply to Jesus. If one were to look at the same texts Christians are looking at with the intent of understanding the meaning and put these texts in their original context, these two interpretations would have completely differing meanings with little to no similarities. Christians go into old testament texts and apply meaning that isn’t actually there because they were written long before Jesus was born. Although Christians do this with good intent, it can completely distort the original meaning of the text that was intended for people to read.
