Crucifixion in Music

Today, in class, we discussed Jesus’s Crucifixion and how it has been theologically interpreted in music. The original text of the Bible distinctly shows the expression of emotions from the perception of those who were onlookers of the Crucifixion. Music with the death of Jesus Christ represents the same emotional appeal. On top of the Crucifixion, we discussed storytelling through music and movies. It is important to know the person before singing about their death, even though some do not explain who Jesus is prior to the tragic event. It also is vital to realize the meaning of the death of Jesus. Whether your mind goes to sacrifice, salvation, or forgiveness of sins, all are the significance of the Crucifixion even if it is not immediately said in the verses of the Bible. How musicians perceive the death of Jesus greatly affects how their listeners later see it. There is a lot to consider when writing a song about the Crucifixion. If the music tone is really dark, we would feel sad, and vice versa if it was happy. Musicians also must figure out where to start and end. The Crucifixion is extremely important to understand and should be perceived through music for more people to hear about it.
