Changing Genre

If one creates a melody, it can be easy to only imagine it in the main genre of the instrument it was created in. In class we discussed that the melody that we came up with seemed like it should be sung in a choral setting. Something that Professor McGrath pointed out to us was that the reason behind this is that it was created with piano. He showed us that if we simply change the instrument, we can change the genre of the song. As previously stated, if you use piano, it can seem classical or choral. If we use electric guitar it can be rock music. If we use acoustic guitar, it can be a lot of genres because acoustic guitar is used in many genres. If we put a jazzy orchestra behind the melody and changed the rhythm a bit, it would be jazz music.

I have never thought about how the instruments used in a song create the genre; so that is something that I found very interesting and something that I would like to try in the future.
