Composing and Assessing Melodies

I have previously discussed simplicity vs. complexity in my blogs. Today, in class, we assessed the melody we created last class. We noticed how the melody we created drastically skipped multiple notes right off the bat, which would make it difficult to sing and doesn’t seem like it would be catchy and memorable.

Next, we looked at changing instruments to make the melody sound of a different genre. For rock music, an electric guitar is almost required to use, while acoustic guitars fit in almost every genre. Rhythm can also make a big difference when attempting to pursue a different genre. When crafting melodies, you not only have to focus on matching lyrics to a rhythm, but also need to make sure you pick a genre and use the appropriate instruments.
