This week we started with talking about children’s songs based on the Bible and everyone gave an example of a song and then talked a little about it. To be honest when I think about children’s songs in general, the songs that I always come up with are Biblical children’s songs, I can’t really think of any children’s songs that do not have a connection to the Bible in some way. That I find very interesting in that many of the children’s songs I grew up with were really Children’s Bible songs and growing up going to Church every Sunday being in the children’s church, going to Vacation Bible School, being in the Children’s choir, and being in the Children’s ministry all contributed to the fact that I really only know Children’s songs that have a Biblical connection. So the song I chose was, “Go Tell it on the Mountain”, just because it is what came to mind first. I remember singing almost every song mentioned in class as a child. The song I chose mainly talks about the birth of Jesus and about going and spreading his word to everyone. Hence the lyrics, Go tell it on the mountain, hills and everywhere.” As a child I mainly understood the the song in the context of the Birth of Jesus and did not really think of it as, going and spreading his word as a whole and not just his birth to everyone. It was interesting to hear everyone else’s songs and their takes on the songs they chose and why some of the songs have certain important information that is just left out. Such as some of the violence that occurred and would obviously be something that would be more difficult to teach children and for them to understand and would create a lot of questions if the songs did include some of the violence that is portrayed in the Bible.
