The conversation we had in class this week revolving around children’s songs based on the Bible revealed two key themes to me that are relatively consistent throughout many of these children’s songs. First, these songs tend to have lyrics that are very repetitive. Most of the time the context in which these songs are played are likely in Sunday school, or other settings where the Bible is being taught to children. Thus, it makes sense that the lyrics would be simple and repetitive, similar to children’s books. This form of song writing makes it easier to take in and will likely help younger children to remember the song better. Additionally, these songs tend to focus more on a single Bible story or even a single verse, whereas more complex Christian songs that we have listened to this semester have included deeper theological concepts at times. Again, this makes sense, as these songs are often meant to share the basics of the Bible with children, and is appropriate considering this target audience.
