New Meaning to Old Words

After class discussion on October 7, 2021, it dawned on me how much of the song “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen is biblical. When I have listened to the song in the past, it has always been clear to me that some lines of the 2nd verse were biblical. “Your faith was strong, but you needed proof. You saw her bathing on the roof. Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you,” states the song. This part has always stood out to me as a blatant Bible reference, similarly to the lines of the story of Sampson and Delilah. One part that I had never caught before was, “that David played and it pleased the lord…the baffled King composing Hallelujah.” After looking into it further, I discovered that line was a reference to David, as a young man, playing the harp for King Saul. There are many biblical references in this song that it can simply be hard to find them all, but it makes for great listening and reflection.
