We talked about a musician named Arnold Schoenberg, who experimented new ways to create music. We learned about one of his opera pieces, Moses und Aron. How does he explore this musically? Moses will start a tone row but doesn’t finish. It is like it’s grasping for this abstract truth. Aron represents a contrast or temptation towards aesthetic beauty, which is the traditional role of music. When you listen to them, Aron sounds like a traditional melody/singing, while Moses is very much this abstract idea. This is where we see how Schoenberg is thinking about an abstract musical idea. It is pure music, none of that distracting beauty, none of that trying to please the audience type music.
