Schoenberg’s 12 note method

In class on 10/26 we explored the musical experimentation put forth by Arnold Schoenberg. The method that stood out the most to me was his serial music approach. In this method, all 12 of the possible notes on a modern western instrument must be used once before repeating notes. Personally, I do not like this method. It does not sound as good to me; it sounds rather low and not like a happy or upbeat song. However, I can see how it is a musical challenge and offers further exploration for music creators. We watched a video by Vi Hart that showed how it is possible to use this method. They took commonly known songs with a recognizable tune and changed them into this 12 note style. The songs still remained similar, but the tune sounded lower and not as childish and happy as before.
