Today we started with reading “The Lord’s Prayer” or “Our Father” in the book of Matthew. We broke down the meaning of the prayer and pieces that usually are missed because of the familiarity of the verse. This prayer is very well known among many people, religious or not. I remember learning this at church as a kid, and reciting it before I went to sleep, but I have never heard it in the way we learned today. What happens when you set this prayer to music? Many composers, such as Christopher Tin and Franz Liszt, have set this prayer to their music. There are other prayers that have been set to music along with words in the Bible that have been woven into prayer. It is so fascinating that biblical words have become part of a prayer that has been rejected by Protestants and yet the musical setting of the words has been appreciated by those who would never utter the words as a prayer.
