chanting- why it was used.

chanting is one of the earliest and most likely easiest ways to make music that could be passed down because of its simplicity. chanting did not focus on how the words were sung due to the lack of a shared musical system but more so on what was sung. the most that would be put in is a few dots on a collection of lines that would tell you how high or low a note was to be sung based off of the dots nearby. these chant sheets would have four lines instead of five like sheet music. meaning that our current shared musical scale can not be used to make sense of this musical form of open-ended chanting.
