Growing up and even still today I have many members in my extended family that are members of the Reformed Presbyterian church. Dr McGrath touched on this denomination a little bit today in class. To go a little deeper this denomination followed John Calvin’s theology in accordance with Psalmody. This means that they exclusively sing psalms or very close paraphrases to the psalms. Additionally, members of the RP denomination only sing a capella in the context of worship. This being said, I have some familiarity with singing popular hymns with different lyrics and like Dr McGrath touched on today, it’s really quite weird and not as catchy to sing whichever psalm to the tune of Amazing Grace. With that background, I thought I would find a few more commonly known songs that could fit some of the Psalms we looked at today. We talked about two different meters, common and long. There are lots of well-known Christmas songs that fall into this category. To list a few: Joy to the World, O Little Town of Bethlehem, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, and I am so Glad Each Christmas Eve. There are even more hymns in this meter: Oh Beautiful, For Spacious Skies, and Oh for a Thousand Tongues to Sing. Some popular songs with this meter include The Beverly Hillbillies, and several other tv show themes.
