Why did ancient churches chant?

Chanting seems to be an odd way to read the Bible. I could not imagine a church chanting through the book of Psalms in today’s world. However, with some historical context, the chanting actually makes a ton of sense. It was common that many individuals back then could not read or write. Being well-educated was a luxury and was not obtained by all. Despite not having the ability to read or write, the less educated people would chant the Scriptures as a strategy to better memorize the Bible. I think of this strategy as a comparison to the ABC’s song, which is used in elementary school to teach children the English alphabet to children. Similarly, the chants used in the age of old were used to help the less educated memorize the Bible, so they could hold the truths about their God close!
