When I was reading “2. Chanting the Hebrew Bible” for class today, I learned that there is no clear answer to what the Psalms sounded like. There are clues such as cantillation marks found in old manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible. The marks are above and below the consonants. However, the original meaning of the marks is a mystery and a “code” that still isn’t cracked. I was not aware that “traditional” and “old” religious music wasn’t just passed down from the origin. I did not know that the true/original meaning of the scripts and marks is a mystery. This is very interesting to me because without reading about this I would’ve still been under the impression that we knew the meaning of the old writings and markings, not that the translations and findings were only guesses.
