An EP released in early 2018 titled ‘My Dear Melancholy,<\/em>‘ per a Canadian R&B artist named The Weeknd<\/em>, is the shortest studio produced release he has had, listening time wise, while it doesn’t shorten itself holding content within.<\/p>\n

Abel Tesfaye known by his stage name as The Weeknd released a 6 song EP in April of 2018. This EP titled ‘My Dear Melancholy,<\/em>‘ was the shortest studio production he had released in his career. It consisted of 6 songs, with a listening time of 21 minutes. Tesfaye known for his style of Hip\/Hop R&B, this project was a grand slam in that aspect. The project can be described as darker than his two works prior, Beauty Behind the Madness<\/em> and Starboy<\/em>, released in 2015 and 2016 respectively. Listeners described this EP to be a return to the sounds they originally heard from The Weeknd in his debut mixtapes House of Balloons<\/em>, Thursday<\/em>, and Echoes of Silence<\/em> released in 2011. My Dear Melancholy,<\/em>\u00a0explores a European style of production with the introduction of a French Producer,\u00a0Gesaffelstein,<\/em>\u00a0listed on the album.<\/p>\n

Lyrically this project focuses on heartbreak and loss. The meaning on the lyrics can be credited to his past relationships with Bella Hadid and Selena Gomez. On the opening track – Call Out My Name – Tesfaye can be heard singing “I claimed you so proud and openly, when times were rough, I made sure I held you close to me.” Later within the track the lines “I said I didn’t feel nothing baby, But I lied. I almost cut a piece of myself for your life.” This is referring to Abel considering donating a kidney to Selena Gomez, as she was going through a kidney transplant during their relationship.\u00a0In late 2017, Gomez and Tesfaye went through a breakup. You can hear Tesfaye describing this saying “Guess I was just another pitstop, till you made up your mind, You just wasted my time.” In an interview, Gomez was credited to say she was worried about what Abel would say on his EP.<\/p>\n
