Frequently Asked Questions
Staff Assembly strives to be a transparent and accessible resource for our community. Below, you will find answers to frequently asked questions.
General Assembly Meetings
Will there be a virtual option for Staff Assembly meetings?
Yes. While Fall 2025 focused on in-person attendance for community building, meetings will return to a hybrid format starting in Spring 2026. This ensures accessibility for staff who cannot attend in person.
How can I stay updated on meeting schedules?
You can find the calendar on the right side of the Staff Assembly website. We also recommend using the ”Subscribe to our Updates” box on the website to receive email reminders and calendar invites (.ics files) directly.
Parking & Transportation
Why are “A” parking stickers sold if the lots are often full?
There are currently 325 “A” designated spaces and over 1,300 additional spaces where “A” permits are valid (such as Hinkle and the Parking Garage). While 1,253 permits are issued, administrators monitor the “tipping point” of availability. If you find an “A” permit no longer suits your schedule, you may swap it for a prorated refund for a Garage-only permit. Contact Parking Services for more information: https://www.butler.edu/campus-services/parking/.
What options are available for staff with mobility issues?
If ADA spaces near your building are full, you may park in any “A,” “B,” or “C” permit space. If further assistance is needed, contact BUPD Dispatch at 317-940-9296 to request an escort or shuttle assistance.
Professional Development & Travel
Why are staff excluded from summer travel abroad opportunities?
Summer trips are typically academic courses where faculty teach specific curriculum to enrolled students. They are not general tourism opportunities. However, spouses who travel often do so as hired “Support Persons” after background checks.
Note: Staff enrolled in a degree program may be eligible to use tuition remission for study abroad if they met credit hour requirements in previous terms.
Do I have to use PTO for faith-based professional development?
If a professional development activity is not part of your official work duties, it is considered a personal activity and requires the use of vacation time/PTO. If you believe the activity aligns with your work duties, please discuss it with your supervisor.
Facilities & Campus Life
What is being done about building maintenance and safety (e.g., Robertson Hall leaks)?
Facilities is aware of ongoing issues like roof leaks and sidewalk maintenance. Updates on long-term repair plans (such as the Robertson Hall roof) are periodically provided by Facilities leadership during General Assembly meetings.
Are there dining options available during the summer?
Dining hours are adjusted based on campus foot traffic. Typically, Plum Market remains open in May, while Starbucks and the Marketplace reopen in June to accommodate summer camps and conferences. Check the Bon Appetit website for hours, menus, and more: https://butler.cafebonappetit.com/.
Community & Connection
Can I organize a staff social group?
Absolutely! Staff Assembly encourages the formation of book clubs, walking clubs, or other interest groups. If you are willing to lead a group, reach out to the Executive Committee for help with promotion. Also, check out existing Affinity Groups on campus for faculty and staff here: https://www.butler.edu/diversity-equity-inclusion/belonging-and-engagement/affinity-groups/.
