Music and Memory

One afternoon while visiting with the seniors at the American Senior Village, an Indianapolis nursing
home, the prompt we worked with a prompt about music. We had a fairly large group that day (about eight people), so Stephanie and I were excited to see what we would come up with. I presented the prompt by saying there was a character who was tapping his/her feet and we had to think of what song could be in her head and determine if there was any significance to it.

We split into two groups then, and started coming up with different songs from nursery rhymes to hymns to country and folk songs. With the help of YouTube, we were also able to spur a few more songs. A lot of times, when somebody would start saying a line in a song, another would pick up, and pretty soon all the seniors were singing along for a few lines. Even though we were in two groups, we still worked together coming up with older songs these seniors grew up with and had fond memories of, whether it was a song they danced to with their departed husband, or a song they grew up listening to from their grandmother and they sang it to their
own children and grandchildren.
