Volunteer at BUCOP

Ready to make a difference in your community?

Volunteers are crucial to the success of BUCOP. Our pharmacy could not provide all the services it does without the help of student and pharmacist volunteers. Read below to learn how you can become involved with BUCOP and learn what it means to provide care to a community in need.

Students

Our unique pharmacy allows student pharmacists to learn alongside faculty members in a safe and engaging environment. As a volunteer, students have the opportunity to take part in various pharmacy duties including:

  1. Filling prescriptions
  2. Labeling prescriptions
  3. Taking blood pressures
  4. Counseling patients
  5. Managing a pharmacy
  6. Collaborating with medical staff and multiple other disciplines on medication-related issues
  7. Gaining real world experience

Volunteering with BUCOP is a unique and rewarding experience. Consequently, we expect all volunteers to demonstrate professional conduct, responsibility, and compassion in all their volunteer duties.

In order to volunteer in the pharmacy, students must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be a professional-phase pharmacy student at Butler University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences
  2. Possess an active pharmacy intern license for the state of Indiana
  3. Attend a clinic orientation and HIPPA training event before volunteering (usually offered at the beginning of each year)

In order to volunteer, you must also sign up for a spot. Openings are filled first-come, first-served and are offered a few times each semester. Once you have completed the training, you will receive emails when the signup is available. If you have any questions, please contact the current Marketing Director, Rylee Kochersperger (rkochers@butler.edu) . Whenever you volunteer, you will volunteer with 2 clinic managers (from the “Meet the Staff” page), 3-4 other student volunteers aside from yourself, and a pharmacist.

New Student Volunteers

If you have new to volunteering at BUCOP, please make sure to contact Marketing Director, Kat Fonfara (kfonfara@butler.edu), to complete the required paperwork prior to volunteering for the 2023-24 academic school year!

A few pointers:

  1. You do not need to bring your Butler name tag to the clinic. The managers will bring printed name tags. However, you can bring it if you want to feel extra professional.
  2. We ask that you please wear a mask to clinic and keep it on at ALL times, including the car ride to and from the clinic.
  3. Closed toed shoes are required.
  4. You don’t have to “dress up,” but please look presentable and professional. We ask that you do not wear t-shirts or sweatpants but jeans with no rips/holes are acceptable. The dress code policy will be attached in future email communications from our Volunteer Director, Rylee Kochersperger.
  5. You may be at the clinic until 4:00 pm or later. Feel free to bring something to eat!
  6. Some Saturdays are busier than others. You may want to bring something to do during down time. (i.e. a book, homework, etc.)
  7. Please keep in professionalism and be weary of avoiding HIPAA violations.
  8. Be confident; we know you will do a great job!

Pharmacists

Pharmacists that would like to get involved:

Thank you for your consideration – pharmacist volunteers are essential in order for the pharmacy to run successfully! Pharmacists provide drug information to the volunteers and managers. They also verify final medications to ensure accuracy. Volunteering at BUCOP is a great way to contribute to the Indianapolis community and help an under-served area of the city. If you are interested in volunteering, please email Dr. Kacey West, our faculty advisor, at kwest1@butler.edu.
