  • A HUG FROM A FRIEND

    by PAULA

    As I type these words,
My smartphone calls me a dumbass,
My cries have risen from felonies past.
I look to you and I’m bombarded with memories.
    I’m reminded
Not only of the bad times
But of the ones that bring sweet falsettos and angelic harmonies.
I steal a glance now and then,
    Catch you catching my eyes,
Reading the words spilling from my pen.
This isn’t the way things were meant to be.
I know they say everything happens for a reason,
And for every season there’s an end.
But couldn’t we forget the past
And pretend for a second that there was something more to this
    Than a neighborly smile,
    A hug from a friend.

  • 88 REASONS TO HATE

    by PAULA

I hate the feeling of not knowing what comes next.
The priceless times of happy endings have always been what is best.
But, now I think back to the times I’ve been left alone in the rain,
And I can’t help but wonder if I’m setting myself up for pain.

  • INTO THE NIGHT

    by PAULA

    Kiss goodbye the bittersweet cries
There’s nothing left to live for
I can’t win this endless fight
    I’m building up another door
Your wish upon a shooting star
    Is wasteful regardless
Don’t stop by, don’t close your eyes
We can’t put the past behind us
No words left to sing in this song
I’m waiting for you to follow
    There’s nothing worth bringing along
That I would wake up with tomorrow
    I can’t believe the disbelief
    I’m hungry for salvation
But I can’t escape the troubled cries
    The needs of a nation
    This is not right
    There’s no love
    No sleep at night
This is not a proper life
    I’m running away
    Take my hand
    And close your eyes
    I can’t go on
There are no roads left to walk upon
    I don’t want to die
But there’s nothing waiting here for me
    So let’s break free
    Into the night

  • WHOAAAH

    by PAULA

    Maybe I should let it all go;
The cherished tears, the laughs I fake
Those glamorous smiles of yours were never mine to make.
It’s like someone took a knife
And ripped my heart out of my chest.
    You know what?
    Scratch that.
How can you cut something out of somewhere it never was?
For, this life-altering organ of mine was in the hands of the best.
Those strong, calloused hands that entangled with mine kept me safe.
They held me near, and I pushed them away!
I was scared what would happen if I stayed,
    Open up again,
    Let you in,
And allowed my nightmares to come out and play.
My past changed the way I think.
My future just doesn’t seem the same.
How can I move on when my feet are rooted to the place where we first kissed?
On the sidewalk in the pouring rain.
I know they say if you truly love someone, let them go.
If thy come back, keep ‘em.
If not, they were never truly yours in the first place.
But, it’s just so damn hard seeing her in your arms,
And knowing that’s where I should be.
So, I suppose all that’s left for me to do is sit back and wait patiently.

  • PAINTED LIES

    by PAULA

    Painted lies
Tell stories of the times you’ve cried.
    I held you tight,
Stayed with you through the night.
Your blood ran free through my fingers
    And I hoped,
    For a moment,
    The lowness of the blow,
The tenor of the symphonic show
Would get the best of you.
    Your wasted smiles
Remind me of the times I wept in denial.
Concern and care fill up the empty space
    Once compressed with air.
I’m the one who’s been there since the beginning.
I’ve helped you through the hard times,
    The never happy endings.
The green eyed monster I hold inside tries to vanquish the hurt,
    The despise,
The wonder of what she has that I don’t.
The chance of finding another like you
Is one in a number that,
    More than likely,
    Won’t ever appear.
So remember the next time she makes you shed these tears,
She rips through your heart and plumages through your fears.
Remember when she leaves you hanging high and dry,
Who was there for you the first thousand times?
