Butler Theatre presents the WORLD PREMIERE of
The Water Carriers. Written and directed by the Butler Christel DeHaan Visiting International Theatre Artist, Michael Williams of Cape Town, South Africa, the production is filled with African songs, dance, and percussion.

The 80-minute play follows a group of modern-day refugees who are attempting to leave Africa in a shipping container. Along the way, the refugees act out ancient stories to keep their traditions alive and to sustain themselves on their difficult journey.  They tell each other two classic African legends: Sunjata, from Mali, and The Tree of Life, from Southern Africa. These tales, handed down by generations of griots (oral historians), are in danger of being lost in the turmoil and migration of people in Africa.
