The construction of Jordan Hall began in September 1926. Built from 2,797 tons of Balfour pink granite and 2,500 tons of limestone, the building was designed in the Collegiate Gothic architectural style by architects Robert Frost Daggett and Thomas Hibben. William C. Smith (Class of 1884), president of the Marion County Construction Company, oversaw the construction of some of the foundations for the building. However, in 1927, the Hegeman-Harris Company, which had built buildings for other universities including Yale, Harvard, and Columbia, was hired as the general contractor for the construction of Jordan Hall, while Smith oversaw the construction of Hinkle Fieldhouse and the Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl. When Jordan Hall opened on September 17, 1928, it was the only academic building on Butler University’s Fairview campus.
