Fall Semester and Geneva Stunts

The first week of November is here and it is busy!

The count down for Thanksgiving Break has begun, and the homework and tests have also been piled on. I can’t believe how fast everything has gone by! I feel like we all just moved in and had our Welcome Week of introducing our biggest freshman class to the best campus ever.

This week has consisted of school and Geneva Stunts. As an education major, I have to be out and about in different schools, helping teach and also observing different teachers, their styles, and thinking of how I will relate it to my school someday. Geneva Stunts is a really fun tradition that has been around at Butler for a long time–I think more than 90 years! The theme this year is BU Comics: With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility. All the fraternities and sororities are paired together (along with all the housing units!) and they put on a ten minute skit about whatever the theme is, which includes dancing, acting and singing. I have done it all three yeas while at BU, and it’s so much fun! I decided to take charge this year for my house along with a good friend of mine in my sorority house named Ashley. We wrote the script, the songs, and have started the practices. The final performance will be this Saturday night at 7 p.m.–when all the families are here for Family Weekend!

There is so much to do at Butler, and it has been a hectic semester. I wouldn’t want it any other way though; I love all the opportunities to be involved, and all the leadership opportunities I have gotten because of Butler. Although these next couple weeks seem unbearable, I’m keeping a positive attitude, and hoping to win Geneva Stunts and have a greta visit with my family this weekend! And do some homework sometime, too.

Familiar Faces

I’d have to say one of the most exciting and loveable aspects of Butler is the many familiar faces I see around campus every day. This is generally an aspect that most students tend to notice and love, but the reason behind this feeling a person gets from Butler goes far beyond the mere size of the school. Granted, the relatively small size of Butler without a doubt drastically improves the odds that you will see someone you know on your way to class; however, the involvement of the student body is another major reason why this feeling is created on the campus. The statistic for students involved in at least one extracurricular activity on campus is somewhere over ninety percent. This statistic is astounding to me. One fact a person will discover though if they spend any time at all talking with Butler students is that most people are involved in MANY extracurriculars and organizations. The opportunities are unlimited. For example, I am just a freshman and somehow already find myself involved in serving on BUSF, two committes for Dance Marathon which benefits Riley Hospital, Late Night Activities Committee for SGA, and CRU. In addition, I am training to be a Young Life leader and also work at the HRC or recreation center. A person also quickly learns that even many of Butler’s athletes are extremely involved. A prime example is Ron Nored. I was just at church this past Sunday evening and looked behind me to see Ron at the worship service. In addition, working at the HRC yesterday I saw Coach Brad Stevens walk in. It is extremely odd to see these people who I was just watching on national television last spring go about their daily lives. Even cooler than getting to see these people though, is getting to witness their awesome character and devotion to Butler. It is extremely encouraging and brings me to one conclusion…I absolutley LOVE the familiar faces at Butler and also cannot wait for basketball season which starts in four days!!!! GOOO DAWGS!
