Reflection #1
Please remember to complete a retreat reflection for Eric & Julianne. We ask that you answer the following three questions, then either post it to this blog, or on your own portfolio. Wherever you decide to post your reflection, make sure to forward the link to Julianne and Eric so they can review them.
1) What goal do you have for this year to make your Info Commons experience a success?
2) What goal do you have for this year to make Info Commons better as a whole?
3) What is your feedback on the whole life values and experiences session we had on Thursday?

CAT Shift 8/29/11
Today I completed my bio, read the CAT Student Handbook, completed my reflection (and emailed it to Julianne and Eric), sent an email to Lauren about what programs I’m comfortable with using, familiarized myself with LibStats, and took the MS Office Survey.
Reflection #1
The goals I have this year to make my Info Commons experience a success are to become better acquainted with rich media programs. I’ve always been pretty good at working with Imovie but this year I would like to expand my knowledge even further and start learning how to work with Adobe Creative Suite. I imagine that in the future there will be a greater demand for training and help with rich media programming.
One goal I have for making Info Commons better as a whole is to really promote our program as friendly and approachable. This is not to say that in the past we’ve been scary and unapproachable but I really want to take things to the next level and allow students, faculty, and staff to feel that they’re coming to see a friend for help not just somebody who works there. I hope to accomplish this by smiling and greeting everyone warmly as they come to Info Commons for help. Additionally I want to strive to maintain (professional but friendly) contact with them after they’ve come to us—so later when they have more problems they’ll come right to us. I also hope to help promote Info Commons outside of my shift. Having a friend (or even a friendly stranger) tell you about a great service is more likely to make you remember that service versus an advertisement.
I really enjoyed the life values and experiences session we had on the Thursday of retreat! It was interesting to focus on all aspects of my life rather than just a category or two. It also made me think about what things I wanted to make a priority. It was a good exercise for helping to achieve balance! I would definitely say keep that portion of the retreat.

I’m really glad to be back and working for Info Commons again this year. Last year was a great learning experience and I was definitely able to gain quite a bit. With that being said I feel confident in stating that my goal for this year would be to learn even more and really apply what I have learned. I know that last year with some of the trainings I had a tendency to simply go through the motions and I didn’t really comprehend all that I had learned. Therefore, I would like to expand my knowledge by really applying all of the programs we support. This will be very helpful in the future when I am interviewing for jobs. I will be confident will a multitude of programs and this will assist with my marketability.
I would have to say that my goals to assist in helping Info Commons become better as a whole would be to expand our presence on campus. We have a great work force this semester and I think it would be great if more students knew about our services. This could be improved with an increase in marketing across campus by using posters for example.
The session on Thursday about whole life values and experiences was definitely something quite beneficial to me. There are so many times when I get so caught up in the moment and forget that this small issue probably won’t matter tomorrow. Taking a look at life in the grand scheme of things in far more valuable than nit picking each and every detail all the time. I really appreciate that we had this session during the retreat.
