Today when I came in the right printer wasn’t printing.  It said processing on the screen so I hit the green button and it started working. I did the everyday tasks.  I found out that you can do double sided copying from the new copier/scanner.  I started Moodle training using atomic learning (apps.butler.edu/atomiclearning).  I helped a student do a webprint to the library printers while using a personal computer.  In atomic learning i finished section C and am ready to start section D next shift.

Today I did everyday tasks.  I helped a patron who was copying and that took about 10 min.  I answered some of Sally’s questions about how to get information to the Infocommons desk.  Jacob left a message about a computer that wouldn’t open Microsoft Work.  He must not have read the Updates page recently because he didn’t get the Virtual Desktop number or the students username.  He did get the number of the computer like the D number, but I’m not sure if that’s the same as the Virtual Desktop number.  I checked the computer and when I was logged in it worked fine.  I forgot to do the cash register until the end of my shift.

I made a procedure telling how to handle public copying for this year.  I also had a color print job and several questions about the scanner.

Today I talked with Josh about BUAnswers that needed to be changed.  We also talked about how the new copier cards work, which Ginny and I were still confused about so she went to clarify further.  I showed Ginny and Sally how the copier worked when scanning something to someones email.  The trick is to hit the big black button to get it to scan and if the scanner has an error reading the “original” then hitting the original button and selecting a document size to manually scan.  I did the everyday tasks.  Ginny and I updated BUAnswers by deleting two posts about copy cards.  I still need to update the new answer posted about how to copy on campus.  It needs the info that “students, faculty, and staff can scan and copy for free.”  I helped a student with the printer.

Today I went through some of the databases to keep up with how to use them.  I also read  the information pop ups about the databases, but did not get through them all.

Today I went through the Libguide and read through all the updated information.  I went through the BUAnswers and read through old and new entries.  I went through all of LCEasy to refresh on the LC system.  I had one color printing job for $1.50 that was logged in Point of Sale.  When I got to work the cash register was locked and had the cash drawer in it.  I’m not sure why it was locked.  I helped a patron use the new scanner.  It took us both about 20 min to figure out how to scan something because it kept saying “No original detected” meaning that the scanner didn’t detect anything.  To solve the problem I had to pick a manual size of paper before it would scan.

While reading iBrain for Info Commons the part that I found most interesting was the comparison between ‘digital natives’ and ‘digital immigrants.’ I found this important because I see it in everyday life.  I see it during the summer while watching my grandmother and niece try to use an iPad, or other technology, together. My niece grew up knowing this technology and uses it with ease while my grandmother has more trouble using it, often giving up before learning how to use it.  I also see this in our work environment. At the library many patrons are from an older generation and they often need help operating the computers or software on them.  Most students are already acclimated to the technology and only have problems when the technology is not available for use. Some students do not know how to use things like a card catalog or print media.  I have seen many students become frustrated when having to use pencil and paper to write down information rather than printing it out because a printer is broken.  I knew there was a generation gap when it came to knowing about technology, but now knowing it comes from our minds being wired differently makes the difference more understandable.
