0Today I talked with Michelle about the fall retreat. We talked about logistics and I started researching ways we could do the scavenger hunt. I found an app that lets you create your own scavenger hunt called SCVNGR. I also brainstormed possible challenge ideas.

0Today I made some updates to my LinkedIn and WordPress blog. I also played in Photoshop and started making a flyer with all the technology logos that we offer support on. I also looked into Prezi because I had never used it, and created an example presentation. I also read up on the retreat planning document and filled out the IC surveymonkey!

0Haven’t posted on my blog this week, so this post should make up for it!
Monday, I worked with Amy in the pharmacy building to help with the PA makeup exams.
Today (Wednesday), Lindsey and I worked on the awesome farewell video for the seniors that will be played this afternoon at the social! And right now, I’m in the library helping people with color printing and the usual library excitements!

1Today I setup a video camera in a classroom to record a speaker. I also worked on some other miscellaneous things like researching summer reading books, and helping Tim with a new assistant favor. I wasn’t sure what to do with the files from the recording so I put them in the shared folder.

0Today I focused on the search for new assistants. I participated in an interview and watched several of the recorded interviews to organize my thoughts about all the applicants.

0Today I participated in two assistant interviews and worked on adding my completed projects to my WordPress blog.

0Today I participated in three interviews for new IC assistants. Being on the opposite side of an interview was a new experience for me but I liked having the opportunity to have a hand in the future of Information Commons. Tim and I had some discussion after the interviews and we were in agreement on the three candidates we saw today. After that I found an awesome website called http://www.code.org/ that has something called CodeAcademy that is an interactive coding teacher. I played around with it a little on shift, but I think this could be a great resource to familiarize IC workers with basic coding techniques. The CodeAcademy allows users to create their own account and will track their progress, letting users earn badges and points to display progress. So I think this is something we could possibly add to the program! Yay coding! It has a wide range of languages too!

0Today I did some research into other academic technologies. One website I found was http://www.digitalclassroom.com/ and it contains tons of video tutorials, and written lessons for various academic technologies. What I really liked about this website was that it had a massive list of technologies. It had the basics that we support in IC (iMovie, Photoshop, Excel, DreamWeaver, WordPress, etc.) but it had almost every other software program available from Adobe, Microsoft, and iOS. The website is not free, so I didn’t get the chance to watch very many videos or see the content, but I think this could be a valuable tool for our student workers to use when learning new technologies, especially those that we do not currently specialize in.
I also stumbled upon an online computer science course from Harvard Extension school (basically Harvard online courses). The course is focused on “understanding” computers and intuitively knowing why computers do the things they do. I began listening to the first class meeting, and was quite impressed with the instructor and the way the information was presented. I plan to continue watching most of the course on my own time, but thought this could be a resource for new and existing IC workers who do not necessarily understand what goes on behind the computer screen. http://computerscience1.tv/2011/spring/
I also spent some time watching a few Ted talks from the digital lives playlist for professional development.

0Today I talked with Michelle about becoming an associate next semester. We discussed basic responsibilities and making the transition from assistant to associate. I made some tweaks to my Dreamweaver site, and took notes on assistant applicant resumes!

0Today I continued working on my Dreamweaver site and figured out how to put it live and everything (basically it’s just on thomas, but now I understand how it works in that sense). I worked on my own header for my dreamweaver site in photoshop and now it looks very professional and unique! I helped a faculty member who wanted to check out an iPad, and I also talked to Tim about summer & fall employment.
