Get Involved with the LGBTQIA+ Alliance

Alliance is a safe space for LGBTQ+ individuals and allies to come and find community. They focus on cultivating a safe, engaging environment to educate and communicate with each other, get involved in activism, learn new skills, and have fun!

Alliance activities include discussion circles, game nights, field trips, drag shows, dances, craft nights, fundraising, and more.

Their office is located in the Diversity Center in the basement of Atherton Union (004), with office hours every day of the academic week.

All are welcome to join regardless of sexuality or gender.

The Efroymson Diversity Center

The Efroymson Diversity Center (DC) exists within Butler University’s Division of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. Our mission is to empower students by building an inclusive community, advancing equity, and creating meaningful impact that will support them throughout their Butler experience. The DC space is located in the garden level of Atherton Union, Room 004, which serves a safe and accessible physical environment for student engagement, support, and community building with a focus on identity.

The DC is includes space for several identity-based student organizations, prayer and meditation space, gender inclusive restrooms, a lounge for Butler students to enjoy, and much more.

Gender Inclusive Housing

Students may opt in to Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH) when completing their housing application for each year they live on campus (including their first). This option is available on the Personal Information Review page. If a student opts into GIH but still needs to identify roommates, the roommate selection process allows said student to see others that also opted into GIH.

GIH means that students with any gender identity or expression may live together in the room or suite/apartment. This includes transgender, nonbinary, and gender-fluid individuals.

Hundreds of students each year opt in to GIH. For students of different genders wishing to live together on campus, all students must have selected this option. This ensures that room- and suite-mates have consented to living with someone of a different gender.

Residence Life strongly discourages any students in romantic relationships from living together.

For students interested in GIH but unfamiliar with the spectrum of gender identities, please use this resource from the Trevor Project to learn more.

Counseling & Consultation and Health Services

Counseling & Consultation and Health Services staff regularly receive training to increase their awareness of and sensitivity to the needs of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Intake forms for Counseling & Consultation and Health Services provide spaces for students to disclose their preferred name, gender, pronouns, and sexuality (if they so choose).

  • Sexual Health Resources
    • Sexual Health Supplies: Condoms and dental dams are available free to students on campus in Health Services, the Efroymson Diversity Center, from dispensers in HRC restrooms, and also from dispensers in residence halls. In addition, students can have free sexual health supplies delivered to their place of residence.
    • STI, HIV, and Syphilis Testing: Butler University has partnered with the Damien Center to offer free HIV/Syphilis testing on campus (availability is dependent upon the Damien Center’s resources).
STI Screening and testing is available in Health Services but not free of charge. Students can pay the following ways: submit through their medical insurance or post charges to Butler student account or pay for the tests out of pocket. Butler University Health Services can/will refer a student to Bell Flower Clinic or Damien Center, which are both local resources which offer very low to no cost for STI testing.
  • Student Health Insurance Coverage for Gender Affirming Care
    • The student health insurance plan does not cover the initiation and maintenance of hormone blockers and/or hormone replacement therapy, top surgery (mastectomy, chest reconstruction and breast augmentation), complete hysterectomy, and genital reconstruction and related procedures.
