Last week Dean of Butler Libraries Julie Miller had the opportunity to speak about Irwin Library’s 50th anniversary and the changes in academic libraries on WFYI’s radio show “The Art of the Matter.” The program is now available as a podcast at http://www.wfyi.org/podcast/AOTM/AOTM.rss. Choose the link for the Aug. 29 broadcast. The Irwin Library segment begins at 14:34.
The September issue of Indianapolis Magazine also includes a page about Irwin Library, on pg. 24 in the “Circle City” section.
The anniversary celebration is less than a week away! Please join us on Monday, Sept. 9, 2-4:00 pm as we turn the clock back to 1963. We hope to see you there!
Butler Libraries’ 2013 Open House and Duck Drop was a success! 852 students and their families walked through our gates, and students tried their hands at dropping a duck into Irwin’s fountain for either a Butler 50th Anniversay T-shirt (see samples in the staff pictures below) or a keepsake plastic duck. Winners of the Circulation Desk and Information Commons gift baskets were first-year students: Mathew Seaman and Claire Krohn.
Thanks, students, for doing the Duck Drop. You have accomplished a newly instituted Butler tradition!
Butler Libraries staff met to go “Back to the Future” in discussing and learning about our Yamasaki-designed library building and how this building and its learning spaces will be used in the future. Yamasaki scholar Dr. Dale Gyure of Lawrence Technological University and College Archivist Kenneth Grossi at Oberlin College videoconferenced with the group to discuss Yamasaki architecture and design.
A set of library readings focusing on how library spaces will be used in the future was discussed, and a re-envisioning exercise was conducted for the various floors of our two libraries. View the screen captures and additional LibGuide tabs to view the results of our day’s retreat at: Butler Libraries Staff Retreat 2013.
