with Dr. James F. McGrath and Brad Matthies

This session will introduce faculty and other interested parties to the Internet Archive, located at archive.org. This site includes two major features that are useful to academics, each suggested by its name.

First, the site has an archive of the internet. Most if not all of us have found useful information online, only to go back later and find that it had vanished. Using what is referred to as the “Wayback Machine,” the site allows you to enter a URL and in most cases find cached copies of the pages from the site in question. For those creating web links for use by students, it is possible to create links to the internet archive’s static copy of a site and maximize the chances that the page linked to will remain as it is.

Second, the site has an archive of out-of-print books and audio recordings which can be embedded into a web page or downloaded. Some of the same books are available on Google Books, but many others are not. In addition to books and journals in a number of convenient formats, there are classical recordings and much else.

The session, led by Dr. James F. McGrath from the Department of Philosophy and Religion in collaboration with Brad Matthies from the library, will introduce the site, its use, and the resources available there. Attendees will have the opportunity to try out the site and look for resources of the particular sort most relevant to their own needs and interests.

Light refreshments will be provided.

Irwin Library has partnered with IR to implement a new laptop loaner program. You can read about it here:

http://www.butler.edu/library/library-information/library-policies/laptop-loaner-policy

Students can check devices out for 24 hours and the devices may leave the library. Faculty or staff can have the devices for 2 weeks. Also, faculty or staff may reserve these devices for university-related business.

Questions? Please contact Brad Matthies (bmatthie@butler.edu or 9549).

Thanks,

Brad

Your Computer’s Security

Hello all.

I just wanted to take a second to remind everyone that we all should have our screen savers set to require passwords to get back in. If your computer goes to screen saver and when you move your mouse you get right onto your computer where you left it, you are not secure!

To set up this function, minimize everything on your desktop, then right-click on the wallpaper and pick Properties. Choose the Screen Saver tab and make sure there’s a check mark next to “On resume, password protect.” Then click OK.

With this set up correctly, you won’t have to worry about getting back to your office to log off your computer if you’re not there at the end of the day. Or even when you walk away from your computer for a few minutes.
