The computer in Reference that has the scanner attached is DOWN. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Apparently the problems that showed up during the summer are still reoccurring. We just might have to get a whole new machine. For the near future, the machine is unavailable and so is the scanner. I’ll pass along updates as I get them.

Ah, the first day of classes – where can one go to take a break from the flurry of first week stresses?  Stop in at one of the Butler Libraries! Besides using us to research and study, if you need a place to have a little “me” or down time, stop by either Irwin or the Science Library.  In the Irwin Library Browsing Room (off to the right as you walk in), you can flip through a current magazine, read a newspaper, or browse our current bestsellers shelf.  So, remember us as not only a place to study but to relax or take a break.

For new students, if you have any questions about where things are
located in either Irwin Library, the Science Library or on campus, don’t hesitate to ask at
the Reference Services desks. We expect these kind of directional and campus
information questions at the beginning of the academic year. By the way, did you
know that you can bring your Starbucks with you into the Libraries? We do allow
drinks (preferably covered) and food in the Library. So, munch away as you study; we just ask that you clean up after yourselves.

Welcome to the academic year, Butler students!  We look forward to assisting you in your academic studies.  -Sally Neal, Assistant Dean for Public Services, Butler Libraries

Classes begin tomorrow (Wed., August 27) and so do On-Call Reference Services. This week we’ll just be working the desk from Noon to 5:00pm. If you’re scheduled for any part of 12:00-5:00 the rest of this week, please be available by phone and/or I.M.

The regular full Reference Desk and On-Call Schedule will begin next Tuesday, September 2, at 10:00am and the official schedule is on the Reference Desk Calendar on Outlook and on BUFiles at G:\Departments\Reference\FALL 2008 On-Call Schedule.xls.

We’ll work the process of requesting subs the same way as we did for working at the Desk. Just email the Reference Desk listserv (lib-rd@listserv.butler.edu) and ask. Once someone has switched or taken your hours, please make sure that the Reference Desk Calendar (on Outlook) is updated for your shift, from something like “Scott” to something like “Brad for Scott.”

If you have any problems with the Reference Desk Calendar on Outlook (it’s one of the Public Calendars like our Personnel Calendar), please let Scott know.

Thanks.
Scott

It was a success! At today’s New Student Library Open House, we had around 50 students volunteer to have their picture taken for the Libraries’ Facebook site to help spread the word about Butler Libraries’ services. Check out the ‘Got Library Information’
photo album on the Butler Libraries facebook site (www.facebook.com) to check out how they are helping to spread the word about the Libraries’ services…. Or, do you see yourself? Tag yourself so some of your new Butler
friends can see what we have to offer too!

Thank
you to those of you who volunteered. Butler students are great! -Sally Neal,
Assistant Dean for Public Services, Butler Libraries

Butler Libraries welcomed new students and their parents Sunday, August 24 with a Library Open House.  Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches were served and went fast with this hot Hoosier heat.  Over 500 families and students passed through Irwin Library’s doors.  We hope you had a chance to get to know us; we look forward to getting to know Butler’s first year students!  -Sally Neal, Assistsant Dean for Public Services, Butler Libraries
