Earth Day Festival

The 2018 Earth Day Indiana Festival will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Historic Military Park at White River State Park. Come to the festival for local food vendorskid’s activities, over 125 exhibitors, live music, and a 5K run/walk.

Better than driving downtown is to take IndyGo! Whether you plan to be on foot for the day or want to bring along your bike, IndyGo has you covered. If you bike and bus to Military Park we will watch your bike for free at our Pedal and Park area as you enjoy the festival or other downtown happenings. Just be sure to be back by 4pm.

Back in 2018 is the Recycle Run 5K! Run or walk a 5K route that is mostly along the White River! The 5K begins (at noon) and finishes at Historic Military Park at White River State Park but the majority of the course will take you upstream and then downstream along the White River. REGISTER FOR THE 5K OR A 1-MILE WALK AT RUNSIGNUP.

ActiveIndy Tours

Offering the only daily, guided tours of the city! Get out, be active and see Indy!

Walking Tours: ActiveIndy Tours leads downtown walking tours that explore a variety of areas and themes. Whether you want to learn what the Central Canal was originally for, how so many war memorials ended up in our city or where the oldest neighborhood is located, we have a walking tour for you! Walking tours cover 2 miles in 75-90 minutes.

Biking Tours: Our casually paced, guided bicycle tours start and finish at the Indy Bike Hub at Historic City Market. The Cultural District and Neighborhood tour is the perfect way to get an overview of all downtown has to offer as we explore history, architecture and public art in the urban core of the city.

Our most popular tour is the Automotive Heritage tour that takes riders to Speedway and back on a route that highlights places that are part of Indy’s automotive history.

Biking tours cover 14-18 miles in 2.5-3 hours and include bicycle rental and helmet or you can bring your own bike for a discount.

Bike Rental: Want to get out and explore on a bike, but your schedule isn’t matching up with our tours? No problem! Rental bikes are available for whenever you need one, whether it’s for a couple of hours or a couple of days!

Running Tours: We run this town! Dreading getting on that treadmill again? Come get your workout in with us on our guided running tour! The Downtown Historic 5k provides a great overview of two different cultural districts, our downtown trail system and a number of historical sites.

These are perfect for runners and joggers of all fitness levels–we adjust our pace to accommodate our guests and multiple storytelling stops along the way allow us to keep everyone together.

A portion of each running tour fee is donated to the Indianapolis Back on My Feet chapter that helps create self-sufficiency within the Indianapolis homeless population.

Spring Thoughts…Best Kite Flying Sites in Indianapolis

Spring is good for kite-flying for three reasons: It’s pleasant outdoors, there’s usually a breeze, and the trees don’t have too many leaves. Leaves block the wind.

This, according to the Hoosier Kitefliers Society, whose members would know since they fly kites year-round, even in February on frozen lakes. (The next HKS event, a choreographed-to-music exhibition by internationally known fliers, is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 30 in Shipshewana, Ind.)

What the fliers look for, optimally, are flat, grassy, open spaces.

Here are seven such spots, some of which are on private property, so you’ll need to ask permission:

Fort Harrison State Park

6000 N. Post Road

This is a former U.S. military base located on Indy’s northeast side.

Sahm Park

6801 E. 91st St.

Plenty of room to let out the line here.

Garfield Park

2505 Conservatory Drive

Indy’s oldest city park, on the south side, in a part of town that’s getting increasingly hip.

Zionsville United Methodist Church

9644 Whitestown Road, Zionsville

Kite enthusiasts on Indy’s northwest side will want to try this spot.

Northwestway Park

5253 W. 62nd St.

This northwest-side open space also is a haven for disc golfers. It and kiting can co-exist.

Soccer field next to Colts Complex

56th Street and Reed Road

If you fly here, you may get a glimpse of Andrew Luck or some other athlete coming and going.

Washington Township Park (near the amphitheater)

435 Whipple Lane, Avon

Fly your kite among people fishing in stocked ponds and playing sand volleyball.
