Holliday Park

PLAN YOUR VISIT – Friends of Holliday Park

Holliday Park is a little gem of a place near Butler.  This park includes statuary, gardens, playgrounds, picnic areas and a nature center.  Trails are rugged and others paved, offering something for every ability.  A lovely water feature for children has been added at the base of the statuary.

Dr. David Geseslin, Superintendent/CEO of the Indiana School for the Deaf wrote the following description:

My last recommendation for a well-rounded outdoor experience is Holliday Park. This park has 3.5 miles of moderately steep trails, winding up and down the cliff-side property along the White River formerly owned by John Holliday, an Indianapolis native and philanthropist. He and his wife donated the property to the city in honor of Indiana’s centennial anniversary in 1916. The park was originally planned as an arboretum, and is home to over 400 species of trees, shrubs, and wildflowers.

While the trails are not wheelchair accessible, the rest of the park has level, paved walkways, a nature center, playground, and an interesting architectural structure. The Ruins were designed and built as a result of a national competition. New York City’s first skyscraper was scheduled for demolition, but the building owners wanted to save the sculptures from the building’s façade. An Indianapolis artist won the competition, and the sculptures, which were actually made from Indiana limestone, were shipped to Holliday Park. Over the years, other architectural remnants and engraved stone have been incorporated into The Ruins, making it an interesting spot to visit.

Mini Marathon Triumph Through Corona Storm

Butler staff member, Juan Buitron, has been working out in readiness for the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon. He recently received unwelcome news of the event’s cancellation.  Juan was informed officials would award shirts and medals to registrants who completed the race on their own.  He decided to make the attempt right then, right there in Fishers, IN. Taking matters into his own hands, he experienced his own neighborhood “Mini” including a cheering section and finish line.  Juan triumphed, running the 13.1 miles in 2 hours and 26 minutes!  Heartiest congratulations!

Finish line fun:  MiniMarathonTriumph

Hi Everyone:

Bring your mat, come as you are, and join me on the soft grass under the tall trees and gentle breeze of The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park: 100 Acres at Newfields (formerly the Indianapolis Museum of Art). Our rain location is always the Indianapolis Zen Center at 37th and Washington.

I lead a supportive, light-hearted practice of exploration. Through postures, you will learn how to listen to what your body is telling you, how to adjust yourself to find Interesting Sensation, and how breathing interacts with movement. Weight balance, tension, compression, stretch, cause and effect, and what you’re thinking and feeling at any given moment become clear.

Every (type of) body is welcome. You don’t need to be a gymnast to get something out of this.

You can only access the 100 Acres parking lot from westbound 38th St. Take the “White River Parkway East” exit. If you are coming from I-65/W. 38th St, make a U-turn at the main museum entrance. White River Parkway East is the first exit between Newfields and I-65.

Our spot is near the “Stratum Pier”. Enter the park from the lot with the basketball court sculpture. Walk towards the pond. Turn left at the swings and right at Funky Bones. Our spot is right in front of the viewfinders.

Yes, the class is free. I in no way make any money from doing this. I’m just doing my small part to hold space for people to come together as friends, learn to get out of our heads and see the wisdom right in front of our faces.

Please be generous towards Second Helpings to help them transform lives in Indianapolis through the power of food. Volunteers there prepare over 4,000 hot meals a day from donated fresh food, deliver those meals at no charge to over 80 local agencies, and provide no-charge culinary job training and job placement.

Nov 4th and 5th Mammography Van Visit

The St. Vincent Indianapolis Mobile Screening Program is pleased to partner with BUTLER UNIVERSITY to offer you on-site screening mammograms on the following dates & times:

MONDAY NOVEMBER 4 & TUESDAY NOVEMBER 5 from 8 am – 2 pm

We now offer Digital Tomosynthesis or 3-D mammograms on the mobile unit as part of our standard of care. Digital Tomosynthesis is an advanced form of mammography that creates a 3-dimensional picture or a high resolution mammographic image of your breast tissue. Most health insurance providers cover all costs associated with 3D mammograms. Please consult with your health insurance provider to  determine if the cost for the 3D – Digital Tomosynthesis is fully covered. You may request a 2D-mammogram if the costs are not covered by your health insurance provider.

 Participation Information:

  • Please review this information letter (below) and the screening guidelines to determine if you are eligible to participate.
  • If you are eligible, please call the St. Vincent Breast Center at (317) 338-9595 to schedule your appointment. When calling, please inform the operator that you are calling from BUTLER UNIVERSITY to schedule an appointment on the mobile unit on the specified date and time.
  • Registration deadline is one week prior to our scheduled visit.

 Appointment Information:

  • Screening appointments typically last for 20 minutes. It’s important for you to be on time for your appointment. If you are 10 or more minutes late, your appointment will be cancelled.
  • You must bring your health insurance card(s) and driver’s license or photo ID with you to your mammogram appointment. If your health insurance information is electronic, please bring a paper copy of your information with you to your appointment.
  • Please wear a two-piece outfit.
  • If you are wearing deodorant at the time of your appointment, you will be asked to wipe it off. Deodorant distorts the images/x-rays. Fresh deodorant will be provided.

St. Vincent is one of the pioneers when it comes to breast health. Each year more than 4,000 women receive their screening mammograms through the mobile mammography unit. We believe that early detection saves lives and is the strongest weapon in fighting cancer. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you!

Sincerely,

Karen Terrell
