A fun night for storytellers of every skill level, designed as an after-works event to relax and unwind. The theme this month is Truth or Dare. Our host, Celestine Bloomfield, will pick ten names from a hat to determine the evening’s lineup. The rules of Indy Story Slam are as follows: the stories must be up to five minutes long, personal and true, told in the first-person, and based on the predetermined theme, which can be interpreted narrowly or broadly. We just ask tellers not to use props or read from the page. The slam judges are selected from the audience, along with a time and scorekeeper, so if you don’t want to tell, you can still participate. Listeners welcomed and encouraged! Prizes are awarded to the top three tellers of the slam.

Hi Everyone:

Bring your mat, come as you are, and join me on the soft grass under the tall trees and gentle breeze of The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park: 100 Acres at Newfields (formerly the Indianapolis Museum of Art). Our rain location is always the Indianapolis Zen Center at 37th and Washington.

I lead a supportive, light-hearted practice of exploration. Through postures, you will learn how to listen to what your body is telling you, how to adjust yourself to find Interesting Sensation, and how breathing interacts with movement. Weight balance, tension, compression, stretch, cause and effect, and what you’re thinking and feeling at any given moment become clear.

Every (type of) body is welcome. You don’t need to be a gymnast to get something out of this.

You can only access the 100 Acres parking lot from westbound 38th St. Take the “White River Parkway East” exit. If you are coming from I-65/W. 38th St, make a U-turn at the main museum entrance. White River Parkway East is the first exit between Newfields and I-65.

Our spot is near the “Stratum Pier”. Enter the park from the lot with the basketball court sculpture. Walk towards the pond. Turn left at the swings and right at Funky Bones. Our spot is right in front of the viewfinders.

Yes, the class is free. I in no way make any money from doing this. I’m just doing my small part to hold space for people to come together as friends, learn to get out of our heads and see the wisdom right in front of our faces.

Please be generous towards Second Helpings to help them transform lives in Indianapolis through the power of food. Volunteers there prepare over 4,000 hot meals a day from donated fresh food, deliver those meals at no charge to over 80 local agencies, and provide no-charge culinary job training and job placement.

A Healthier Fall Treat

Butternut Squash and Apple Muffins with Pumpkin Seed Streusel

butternut-squash-apple-muffins640x360
Muffins:

1 1/2 cups of cooked butternut squash (I like to halve mine, scoop out seeds, and slow roast for about an hour at 325 degrees Fahrenheit)
4 eggs
1/4 cup of dark brown sugar (up to 3/4 cup for a sweeter muffin)
1/3 cup applesauce
6 T vegetable oil
1 t salt
1 t baking soda
2 t baking powder
2 t cinnamon
2 cups whole wheat pastry flour
1 medium apple, peeled, seeded, and finely chopped

Streusel:

1/4 cup dark brown sugar (can use more here too if you like)
1 t cinnamon
1/3 cup chopped and toasted pumpkin seeds

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

2.  In a large bowl, mix wet ingredients by whisking together cooked squash, eggs, dark brown sugar, applesauce, and vegetable oil.

3. In a medium bowl, mix dry ingredients by combining salt, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, and whole wheat pastry flour.

4.  Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and whisk until just combined.  Stir in chopped apples.  Spoon into greased muffin tins about 2/3 of the way full. (You can use cupcake papers if you like.)

5.  Combine streusel ingredients (brown sugar, cinnamon, and pumpkin seeds) and sprinkle a nice spoonful over top of each muffin before baking.

6.  Bake muffins for about 15 minutes until just done and a tester comes out basically clean.  Let cool a few minutes in tins and then remove muffins to a cooling rack.  (I had to use a knife to loosen them before removing.)
