I enjoyed listening to the oldest piece of written music. I was surprised by how distinguishable the melody was. Furthermore, the depth of layers and variety of instruments used in this piece took me by surprise. I noticed some shifts in tone and pitch. I found myself wondering whether these shifts indicated transitions in theme. While the music was pleasant to experience, I do not think that I would enjoy listening to that type of music for prolonged periods of time. As for the oldest piece of Christian music, I enjoyed the complexity and depth of the selection. I was expecting the piece to sound more like Gregorian chant. I think the instrumental background and changes in tone distinguished this selection from the more monotonous Gregorian chant. At times I struggled to determine whether the cantors were speaking or singing. Even though I could not understand the lyrics, the rhythm and tone of the piece was reminiscent of a liturgical prayer.
