Before Cantor Giora Sharon visited our class (1/19), I was expecting him to almost perform for our class. Instead, he provided his life story which put into context what a cantor’s role is in the Jewish tradition.
I found Cantor Sharon’s way of explaining what he does easy to understand and he answered a lot of my questions as he spoke. I learned that being a cantor is a respected and proper title in a synagogue, as well as the history of how becoming a cantor has changed in the last 60 years.
I want to thank Cantor Sharon for sharing his story with us in a way that allowed me to grasp the concept of chanting more concretely. His presentation allowed me to better understand why singing is performed in religious settings.
