In the beginning of class we discussed the children’s songs we chose for class. We discussed their similarities and found that they were: upbeat, simple, repetitive, happy, and reassuring. The professor went on to further explain how to keep songs upbeat, it uses a lot of the same chords and stays in major keys.
Children’s songs are simple and repetitive because kids can then catch on to songs easily and remember them. The songs are reassuring and happy to maintain their innocence. For instance, Noah’s ark and the flood, this is generally a darker tale because God is wiping out most of the life on the planet. This concept though is replaced with lyrics “floody, floody” to put a better spin on the concept for the kids.
Essentially, songs are written in a way we can relate to them and because children generally live simpler lives, and these songs are relatable to them when they are simplified, reassuring , and repetitive.

I think that it is brilliant how they are able to simply such large topics within a children’s song!
