Today we discussed how to keep music interesting and vibrant. A lot of it involves experimentation, and just being different. The professor then brought up tone row to explain some of the structure involved in music composition. He then said how math actually influences the harmony. This is interesting to me because I always saw music as a somewhat jumbled mess with a little bit of structure, after the comment on how harmony has mathematical influences, it shows that music has more structure than I thought.
The guest speaker, who is a composer, talked about how goes about writing music, and I liked the idea that he starts writing music with different aspects from which he draws his inspiration like people, words, food, movies, etc. I also liked how he talked about the whole process music composition, and how he can sometimes write quickly, but other times he goes through a series of drafts like a novelist. Hearing this, made music slightly more relatable and less intimidating
