The Bible and Music

Biblical Children’s Songs

I really related to our discussion on children’s music today.  I grew up going to a Catholic church and attending religious ed once a week, so I remember hearing some of these songs as a child.  All of the songs are happy and reassuring.  They convey God’s love and acceptance and all around goodness.  Children are often not taught some of the less comforting aspects of the Bible until they have already been involved in the church for years.

On top of this happy-go-lucky vibe, these songs are often repetitive.  They are easy to remember and easily get stuck in your head.  These songs are almost propaganda for the church.  They hook children in at a young age and teach them everything good, but leave out the bad and scary.  By the time they learn the complete story, they have already dedicated themselves to the church.  It makes me realize how important these songs are to the continued health and popularity of the church.
