The Bible and Music

Characteristics of Children’s music

Listening to old children Bible songs brought back feelings of nostalgia, and reminded me of being a little kid in Sunday school. I never thought about some of the characteristics of children’s music until this class. We discussed how most children songs were simple, repetitive, reassuring, and upbeat. There was a great point brought up that children songs are usually light-hearted and easy for children to grasp. For example, songs about Christ dying on the cross are usually upbeat and happy, although the crucifixion was a very gory, and violent death. Children music is used to teach critical Biblical lessons in a way that is not too much for children to comprehend.

I think you’re right! The reason for the happy and upbeat element of children’s songs is so that it is easy for children to grasp!
