Heading into the 2025 Super Bowl, many expected a competitive game between the Chiefs and the Eagles. Instead, what we got was a 40-22 beatdown by Philadelphia. Let’s take a look at everything that went down and how the Eagles were able to get the job done.

Eagles’ Defensive Dominance

The biggest aspect of this game was the Eagles defense. Rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean picked off Patrick Mahomes and returned it for a touchdown. Additionally, Mahomes threw another interception to Zack Baun. Philadelphia’s defensive line also played a great game. They finished with six sacks, led by Josh Sweat’s 2.5 sack performance. However, the highlight of Philadelphia’s effort was how they forced Mahomes into poor play.

The Worst Game of Mahomes’ Career

To this point, Sunday’s game was the worst game of Patrick Mahomes’ career. His numbers didn’t look bad at the end of the game, with 257 yards and three passing touchdowns. However, two of these scores came with under three minutes left in a blowout loss. In addition, the final touchdown was a 50-yard bomb to Xavier Worthy. His play was exemplified by a dismal first half. The future hall-of-famer finished the first half with just 33 passing yards on six completions and two interceptions. It was simultaneously one of the worst quarterback and best defensive halves in Super Bowl history.

Eagles’ Offense Showing Up in Multiple Ways

If you would’ve told the Chiefs before the game that Saquon Barkley’s final stat line would be just 57 yards on 25 carries with no touchdowns, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo would’ve already begun planning the parade. Instead, Jalen Hurts showed out and shined. He threw the ball for 221 yards and two touchdowns, one to A.J. Brown and the other to Devonta Smith. Notably, Hurts also rushed for 72 yards and a score, cementing his case for Super Bowl MVP.

After enduring a tough year last season, the battle-tested Eagles showed how well they can bounce back from adversity.
