Effective Communication

To be an effective communicator one must have the awareness to think through the four levels of communication. Effective communication is the basis for all Human Skills. Jamie Merisotis states that the future of human work draws upon three sets of skills that everyone needs to develop in his new book, Human Work. Those skills are People Skills, Problem Solving Skills, and Integrative Skills (Merisotis 53).

Effective communication is the building block of establishing strong people skills. When a student is using these skills, they are considering how their emotions impact their actions, they are willing to listen and make sure others understand what they are saying.

Level 1- Pause, Notice, Identify emotions;

Level 2- Listen to Others, Make Sure They Understand;

Level 3- Serve Your Information, Allow Other to Return;

Level 4- When communicating with others: be clear, concise, stick to the facts, and stay on topic.

We invite you to further consider how we might reimagine and redesign schools and education through the development of communication skills below.
