He has been called “the most influential English-speaking philosopher of the nineteenth century.”

John Stuart Mill had a key part in the movement known as utilitarianism.  He contributed to social and political theory and was very instrumental with implementing new ideas and policies in the 19th century.  He was revolutionary in the fact that he was one of the first males to fight for women’s suffrage, he spread the ideas of utilitarianism which created a more positive outlook for society and was extremely revolutionary for the time.

His unique childhood was definitely a factor in his progressiveness as an adult.  His intellect could have quite possibly been his downfall, but luckily he was able to overcome his mental illness.  His father who was also an economist and author was a huge influence on John Stuart Mill.  A lot of famous writers and philosophers were very influential on his life and decisions.  His wife, who was his close friend for more than twenty years, was who Mill admired most.  He claims that she is the reason his health was able to continuously progress.
